Bird Banding at Rushton Farm
Bird conservation is a key part of Willistown Conservation Trust’s commitment to the land and nature in our area of Pennsylvania. We joined the Trust’s Bird Conservation Program banding team and scientists from the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia one morning to observe how they document the birds that use the nature preserve as either a breeding and nesting site, or as a stopover during migration. The team has documented thousands of birds, measuring bird populations’ response to agroecological farming practices and habitat restoration and management.
Another amazing tool being used by the Trust’s Conservation Program is Motus Electronic Tracking. Some of the captured birds are outfitted with tiny radio transmitter nanotags which relay realtime migration data to the ever growing number of Motus tracking towers as they fly by.
